Reasons to Avoid DIY Pest Treatments

Pubished On: August 25, 2022

Having any sort of pest infestation in or around your house is an awful feeling! No one likes to have insects or other animals lurking around. Many homeowners, in an attempt to rid their homes of these unwanted visitors, turn to DIY treatments to get rid of them.

What is a DIY Pest Treatment?

DIY pest control treatments are treatments in which someone attempts to rid pests by doing it yourself, as opposed to hiring a professional. DIY can help save money and lead time, but ultimately, it can cause some severe problems for you and your home.

Reasons to Avoid DIY Pest Control

Though potentially cost-effective at first, here are a few reasons why you should not attempt to DIY your home’s pest control:

Short-Term Solution

One of the biggest reasons to avoid this type of treatment is the fact that it is often a short-term solution. These types of treatments really only allow for the treatment of things that the homeowner can see. In addition, most products available to homeowners only kill the pests when they make contact with the pest, meaning that you have to spray them to kill them. Unfortunately, if you miss even a few of these, they can still continue to multiply and wreak havoc around your house.

Potential for Error

Unfortunately, there is room for error when you DIY your pest control treatment. Although you may have done research and read the directions on your treatment, there are still some things that can go wrong, such as spraying more than what is actually necessary, harming plants, altering your water supply, or even spraying too little of the product.

Lack of Pest Knowledge

Knowledge of the specific type of pest you are trying to get rid of goes a long way in ensuring the problem is truly eradicated. Each type of pest, insects especially, have a pattern that they stick to as a species. Knowing their breeding, feeding, and dwelling patterns will help ensure the problem goes away for good. Often, professionals are better at this than homeowners because, well… they’re professionals! This is what they do all day, every day.

Unable to Treat the Source

On a similar note, many homeowners fail to treat the source because they don’t know the source of the infestation or can’t find it. Again, professionals are able to find this more readily because they know the habits of each type of pest.

Inability to Use the Best Treatments

Over-the-counter treatments you get at hardware stores aren’t always the best for getting rid of pests. Some treatments that professionals offer are more effective due to the availability of chemicals to the public and because the chemicals are more specific to the type of pest. Hardware stores offer many one-size-fits-all treatments, whereas professionals can use products intended for the specific species.
