Cockroaches in Arizona

Pubished On: March 13, 2022

As we say goodbye to winter and embrace spring and summer, one important thing homeowners should keep in mind is the return of pests. That’s the unfortunate reality: hot, dry weather increases pest activity. One pest that can be significantly affected by the weather is the cockroach.

Cockroaches generally will infest a home more during the winter to escape the cold, but they also particularly enjoy moist areas. Rain and humidity mean cockroach activity will increase in the spring and summer. They’ll seek refuge in the dark, moist areas of homes, such as attics or basements.

However, Urban Desert Pest Control understands that better knowing cockroach patterns and common species can help to keep them out. In this article, we’ll identify the most frequent cockroaches in Arizona and what you can do to prevent them from invading your home. Plus, we’re always happy to give you a free quote for cockroach (or any other pest) control services.

Common Types of Arizona Cockroaches

There’s no doubt that cockroaches are perhaps the most persistent pest. They can hide in garbage bins by day and enter a home by night, bringing with them diseases. Arizona, especially Phoenix, is one of the most cockroach-infested areas in the United States. So, you should be aware of the common cockroaches you may encounter this upcoming year.

The German Cockroach

German cockroaches have a body that’s light brown or tan, and they have two black stripes behind their head. They grow to 13-16 mm and have wings but rarely fly. You’ll typically find German cockroaches in kitchens and bathrooms if they do enter your home.

The American Cockroach

With the largest body size of a cockroach, the American cockroach can grow more than 50 mm (3 inches) long. They have a reddish-brown or mahogany color with a yellow band behind their heads. Both the male and female American cockroaches can fly, and they’re often found in damp areas like flowerbeds. This, of course, doesn’t mean they won’t enter your harm looking for food, water, or shelter.

The Brown-banded Cockroach

The brown-banded cockroach gets its name from the light brown bands on its wing. They’re also one of the smallest cockroaches, reaching a size between 11 to 14.5 mm. Their small size certainly makes it easier for them to enter homes. If they do, you’ll often see them inside cabinets, pantries, and closets.

The Turkestan Cockroach

The Turkestan cockroach is roughly 1 inch, and they’re colored dark-brown to black. Turkestan cockroaches have small wings, so you shouldn’t find them flying much. They also usually live outdoors in places like concrete cracks, compost piles, or potted plants.

Cockroach Prevention

You don’t want your home to be overrun by cockroaches, so the best pest control is proactive pest control. That’s why we outlined 10 ways to prevent pest infestations in an earlier blog post. Common tips include sealing off food, sealing cracks, decluttering, and more. Additionally, we’ve discussed exactly how cockroaches get into your home. Methods of entry range from exterior wall cracks to drain pipes.

Nevertheless, what’s even better than do-it-yourself pest control is regularly-occurring visits and treatments from an experienced pest control team. This is where Urban Desert Pest Control can make a significant impact on you and your family. We have the right training and chemical treatments to stop cockroaches (or any other pest) from the start and keep them out.
