Why Are There Mosquitoes in My Backyard?

Pubished On: July 21, 2022

Nobody likes waking up after a night outside to dozens of itchy bites as a result of mosquitoes. Mosquito bites hurt, itch, and can last for several days. What if you could get rid of mosquitoes in your backyard so those bites are a thing of the past? In order to rid your backyard of mosquitoes, you must first understand what draws them to your backyard and what keeps them there. Read on as we discuss why there might be mosquitoes in your backyard.

Reasons Mosquitoes Might Be Hanging Around

Though there are certainly more than this, here are a few reasons that mosquitoes might be hanging around and enjoying your backyard:

Standing Water

One of the favorite substances of mosquitoes is water. In fact, they spend about 75% of their lives in water. By harboring standing water in your yard, you are quite literally making a home for mosquitoes to live in. Be sure to look high and low for standing water after a rainstorm or after watering the lawn to see where water might collect.

Excess Debris

You should also check up on debris in your yard after a rainstorm. Wind can wreak havoc on your yard, taking down tree limbs, sticks, or other vegetation. These, too, are places that mosquitoes like to hide in. Be sure to keep grass clippings, compost piles, and downed trees out of the way as soon as possible so as to not harbor mosquitoes.

Untamed Gutters

Though perhaps a bit of a pain, having clean gutters will ensure less mosquitoes live on your property. Gutters give them water and a place to hide, which means double trouble for you as the property owner.

Lack of Repellants

Sometimes, especially after getting rid of debris or standing water, mosquitoes can be used to coming around your property. The use of repellents, such as citronella, lavender, or peppermint, can help ensure mosquitoes are not given a place to stay but are also repelled.

Too Much Thatch

Too much thatch, or a woven layer of dead organic materials, can occur between your grass and soil. Though it is normal to have some, too much thatch can again mean a hiding place for mosquitoes to live in. You can get rid of excess thatch by raking or using a dethatching tool.
